Organic farming is a sustainable system which maintains the long-term fertility of the soil and uses less of the Earth's finite resources Organic farming protects and values wildlife and the environment. It encourages diverse wildlife and provides a home for the animals and insects which are beneficial for the natural predatory control of pests. Fertility of the land is maintained by the use of animal manure and by crop rotation.

Organic Milk Production on Organic Farms:
- Emphasis is put on allowing livestock to fulfill their natural behavioural needs and instincts. They enjoy access to natural light and air and are protected by the rigorous animal welfare standards of the Soil Association.
- Natural therapies such as homeopathy are used. If antibiotics are essential for an animal's welfare they can be used selectively but the milk is withdrawn from human consumption well beyond the standard recommended time.
- Cows are fed on a natural diet of organically grown foods. Intensive feeding for high yields is not allowed.
- Calves cannot be exported nor can they be purchased through livestock markets.
Organic Farming does not allow the use of:
- Artificial pesticides, herbicides or other chemical sprays
- Artificial fertilisers
- Antibiotics or other drugs, unless their use is necessary for animal welfare
Organic Farming prohibits the use of:
- Growth promoters or feed additives
- Genetically modified products
